Hello, Welcome to this weeks plog. In our last post, we discussed the 5 things we stand to gain by practicing project management. Now let's take a look at what exactly defines a project. So you're working on something at work. It has been going on for over a year, but you joined 6mths ago. In discussions, your boss has indicated that its something that tends to repeat itself, with the odd cosmetic changes here and there. Being a responsible steward of the job assigned to you, you've created a great 'project plan'. You've got some great stuff itemized, some key milestones, some due dates. However something is gnawing at you, in particular, no matter who you talk to, you can't seem to pin down an exact completion date because every time you try to, you start from the beginning again. You've visited the archives and see a score of binders of past such work, in fact they're nearly identical in the nature of the work. Nothing has not changed to any considerable extent. You could literally swap out the title on the binder, some names and some dates, and they'd be nearly identical. |

Hello, In our last plog we looked a 'why do we need project management?'. Today, we follow that up with looking at what we stand to gain by practicing project management. After all, it's one thing to understand the importance of a practice, but like most people, we usually look out for for what's in it for ourselves. So let's begin. Here's five things that could be gained: 1. A satisfied client 2. A satisfied boss 3. Organizational efficiency and effectiveness 4. Accountability to members of governing bodies 5. Your own reputation enhancement and protection. |

In my last post we began an exploration into the seemingly benign question "Why do we need Project Management anyway?". Side stepping one of the more obvious reasons such as without formal active project management, a project is less likely to stay the course in schedule, cost and quality, we can however say that one very good reason we need project management is to 'set expectations'. So what does 'setting expectations' exactly mean? |

Hello and welcome back. I hope 2009 has started off on the right foot for you. 2008 proved to be a very challenging year. We saw the demise of large, far reaching banks and companies, the default of countless mortgages, the challenge of keeping the big three automakers afloat and much much more. All possibly summarized into what we could call the 'Big Bail Out'. It turns out that the $8.5 trillion price tag of the bail out is more than the costs of every U.S. war — from the U.S. Civil War to Iraq — according to the Congressional Research Service and Cybercast News Services. |

Have you ever wondered about a very obvious question that most of us give little thought to? The question is "why have Project Management anyway"? Why do we do it? Why do we subject ourselves to the countless meetings, long endless QandA sessions with SME's (subject matter experts) where we, Project Managers are seen as aliens from another planet, lengthy status reports, and requirements gathering sessions and documentation that never seem to get completed? |
